Chié Shimizu
Liminality lies at the core of Chié Shimizu’s Upside-down series. Through quietly surreal sculptures, she reflects on the condition of being suspended between worlds—moments of uncertainty, transition, and reflection.
In these works, figures stand on their hair, appearing to float between earth and sky. The earth may represent life in the present, while the sky suggests the unknown or the afterlife. Suspended between the two, the figures exist without a clear sense of stability or belonging, inhabiting a space that is neither arrival nor departure.
By overturning what we perceive as natural, Shimizu invites viewers to reconsider familiar perspectives. Her works return attention to the human body while quietly contemplating the fragile yet powerful nature of human existence.
